MacOS brings with Time Machine a very easy-to-use backup function – first Apple had the application in Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard installed, which appeared in October 2007. Since then, there are no excuses for lack of backup, because macOS and Time Machine do the job reliably and conveniently. From connecting a cheap USB hard drive to the start of the first backup on it takes only minutes, but. However, I’d strongly suggest plugging an Ethernet cable between your new Mac and the Time Capsule to migrate for speed’s sake. Speaking of which: Don’t use Wi-Fi.

I bought a new MacBook Air running the latest Mountain Lion, and moved my user files over from the old MacBook Air, which was on Snow Leopard. I have the Snow Leopard Time Machine backup on a Time Capsule that I want to inherit for my new Time Machine backups. I found some articles that indicate that the Time Machine preferences are supposed to pop up a panel (at least in Lion) with an option to 'Use Previous Disk...', followed up in the next panel with an option to 'Inherit Backup History'. (See http://www.macworld.com/article/1161421/migrate_time_machine_backup_to_new_mac_i n_lion.html ) However I can't find a way to get that first panel. All I can get is 'Select Backup Disk...', and the single option of setting up a brand new Time Machine backup on the Time Capsule. It creates a new sparsebundle there, with a ' 1' after the disk name to deconflict with the previous backup already there. Not what I want.
Any tips would be appreciated.
